Mental health at university: a tale of two students

Ethan Gallagher, 20, ExeterIt was during freshers week in my second year at Exeter University, in 2021, that I got a call from my mum that changed everything. It was 8am on a Friday – not a time she would usually call – and she told me she had the worst news. I immediately thought my older sister Megan might be ill or that our dog Bentley might have died since he’s quite old. Then she told me that Dad had died. It was awful, shocking and heartbreaking. I told my housemates and they sat with me until a friend of Megan’s came to Exeter to travel home to Newbury with me. I didn’t want to be alone for that journey.
