Prosecutors said the 30-year-old bundled his victim into her own car before driving to a remote rural location and leaving her hidden in a thicket of bracken and brambles. He also made a series of bogus calls and texts to Megan's mobile phone, both before and after he disposed of it in bushes following her death. But Leicester Crown Court heard McCullum made a 'crucial mistake' and failed to turn the device off – allowing her worried family to track it to countryside just a mile from his home while desperately searching for her the next day. It was eventually retrieved by police – who subsequently arrested McCullum on suspicion of kidnap. In interview he admitted Megan, who lived with her family in Nuneaton, was dead, and told detectives where they could find her body. John Cammegh KC, prosecuting, told the jury in his opening speech that McCullum accepted he had killed Megan, but pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming he was suffering from 'either through a temporary loss of control or an abnormality of the mind'. However, he added: 'The Crown's case is that the defendant embarked immediately upon a series of deliberate actions carefully calculated and executed to cover up Megan's murder and his role in it.
