Toe the party line or face ad bans, Beijing warns actors

Prominent Chinese celebrities and actors who have depicted communist icons such as Mao Zedong are to be banned from “unsocialist” work such as advertising private tuition, alcohol or tobacco under new rules from the ruling party.

President Xi’s government has issued regulations prohibiting celebrities from appearing in adverts it deems inappropriate as it seeks to control the influence of celebrities and star power.

“In recent years, some celebrities have appeared in illegal or false advertisements, and some even promote wrong views in promotional activities,” said the guidelines issued by seven central government agencies yesterday. “Some businesses have chosen celebrities who violated the law or breached moral standards to promote their products.”

The authorities did not name specific examples, but were likely referring to an outcry
