Liverpool owners FSG handed Klopp warning amid Merson ‘change’ verdict

Liverpool’s owners The Fenway Sports Group have been told to back Jurgen Klopp in the transfer market to turn around the club’s poor form or risk losing the iconic coach. The Reds have endured a difficult start to the campaign and Klopp has demanded more from his squad as they aim to reduce the gap to title contenders Arsenal and Manchester City. The Merseyside outfit have only won four of their 12 Premier League games in the current campaign and are already 15 points off the pace, with a 2-1 home defeat to Leeds United on Saturday only exacerbating the issue.Klopp has conceded his squad must improve if they are to finish in the top four and insisted he “expects more” from his players, as well as himself, as the 55-year-old attempts to turn around their fortunes. But Merson, the former Arsenal midfielder, has urged the club’s owners to hand the German more funds in the coming transfer windows to reinvigorate his squad after spending the lowest amount of the top-six clubs this summer – or risk losing him altogether.READ MORE: Hamann tells Liverpool boss Klopp to sign left-field star over Rice Jurgen Klopp: The Liverpool head coach may decide to leave, according to Paul Merson (Image: Getty Images/Express Sport) Jurgen Klopp: The German boss has been in charge for seven years at Anfield (Image: Getty Images)”Will Klopp be thinking he’s taken Liverpool as far as he can? I’m not sure, but one thing I am certain of is that it will ultimately be his decision. Liverpool have to keep him but whenever the time comes to make a decision, it will be his,” Merson told Sky Sports.”Klopp is an elite manager, he’s not in the job to finish fourth in the league, for those kind of managers that is not success. Klopp will want change. I don’t think he has been backed that much, yes, they spent £85m on Darwin Nunez but that was one player, they need a few more if they are going to get back to where they were.”Liverpool managed to convince Mohamed Salah to sign a new contract to extend his stay while Roberto Firmino is thriving after a dry spell in front of goal. But other stars such as Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum, seen as pivotal to Liverpool’s success over the past six years, have moved on and long-serving players like Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk are into their 30s.DON’T MISSKlopp has four Bellingham alternatives if Liverpool plan failsLiverpool boss Klopp hints at transfer stance with ‘quick fix’ remarkCarragher identifies Liverpool transfer mistakes without Plan B Paul Merson: The Sky Sports pundit has sent Liverpool a warning over Klopp (Image: Getty Images)
