Suella Braverman latest: Migrant ‘invasion’ remarks were unwise, suggests Home Secretary’s deputy

Suella Braverman’s comments about an “invasion” of Channel migrants were not wise, her deputy suggested on Tuesday morning.

The Home Secretary said in a Commons statement on Monday night: “The British people deserve to know which party is serious about stopping the invasion on our southern coast, and which party is not.”

Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister, said Ms Braverman had been referring to “the sheer scale of the challenge and that’s what [she] was trying to express”.

But appearing to row back on her exact rhetoric, he told Sky News: “In a job like mine, you have to choose your words very carefully. I would never demonise people coming to this country in pursuit of a better life and I understand and appreciate our obligation to refugees.

“She was also speaking, I think, for those people who live on the south coast who day in, day out are seeing migrant boats landing on their beaches.”
