Christmas post under threat as CWU rejects Royal Mail’s 7% pay offer

The post may be disrupted in the weeks before Christmas after an attempt by Royal Mail to end a dispute with staff was rejected by the Communication Workers Union.

Royal Mail said yesterday that it had put a new pay deal to the CWU, which included a 7 per cent pay rise over two years and an additional lump sum of 2 per cent this year. The proposals are contingent on the union agreeing to an overhaul, such as changes to start times and Sunday working, but the union dismissed the offer as “unacceptable” and “derisory”, and threatened further strikes.

Talks between the two sides took place yesterday at Acas, the conciliation service. Royal Mail wants to modernise its operations by introducing more automation, but
