Drivers could be given penalty points for not wearing a seatbelt

Government proposes safety crackdown amid fears that £100 fine is not severe enough

Drivers will be handed penalty points if caught not wearing a seatbelt under a safety crackdown considered by ministers.

Points would be added to motorists’ licences under the proposals to tackle the “unacceptably high” number of fatalities caused by drivers and their passengers not wearing seatbelts, the Government said.

The plans come more than 40 years after wearing a seatbelt first became a legal requirement on Britain’s roads.

The law, in relation to people in the front two seats, started to be enforced two years later. In 1991, passengers in rear seats were similarly mandated to buckle up.
