Authorities have launched an investigation into the collapse of the bridge with officials claiming it probably snapped as it could not handle the number of people on it. Harrowing pictures from the scene show survivors desperately trying to climb up the remains of the bridge while others attempted swimming to safety. An eyewitness called Madan said: "I was about to set my foot on the bridge when I heard the loud thud it came down crashing. "We rushed to safe place after witnessing people falling into the waters and some even got trapped and screamed for help. "It was literally visuals straight from the hell."
