Suella Braverman suspended from US Bar

Suella Braverman, the home secretary, has been suspended from practising law in New York for failing to re-register as an attorney there for four years.

Braverman, who served as the UK’s attorney-general, passed the New York bar exam in 2006, allowing her to practise law in New York State.

Attorneys who are registered to practise there must re-register every two years and pay a registration fee of $375. Attorneys that fail to do so, and do not otherwise resign from the bar or retire, are subject to suspension proceedings.

Braverman’s suspension notice, issued on October 7, 2021 under her maiden name Sue-Ellen Cassiana Fernandes, says that a failure to register “shall constitute conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice and shall be referred to the
