Climate campaigner Greta Thunberg pleads for blogger Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s freedom

Greta Thunberg joined protesters in London yesterday in calling for the release of a British-Egyptian activist who is being detained in Egypt.

The climate campaigner urged the British government to intervene in the case of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, whose sister, Sanaa Seif, has been mounting a “sit-in” protest outside the Foreign Office in Whitehall. Thunberg, 19, held a colourful sign that read “Free Alaa before #COP27”.

The Cop climate meeting takes place in Sharm el-Sheikh next month. El-Fattah, a blogger and activist, has been on hunger strike in prison for six months.

Thunberg was last night due to host An Evening with Greta at the Southbank Centre for the launch of her new book.
