Start-ups win injection of vital funding

A company that makes carpooling apps and an eco-friendly concrete start-up have been named as the UK winners of a global entrepreneur competition run by Santander and Formula One.

Staxy, started by William Lines and two university friends after he missed his brother’s birthday because he couldn’t afford the train fare, and Concrete4change, founded by Dalraj Nijjar and two engineer colleagues, were each awarded €10,000. They will gain access to Santander’s network, which includes potential clients, investors and fellow founders.

Lines, 24, said “any funding goes a long way to supporting the business” and added that the money would be spent “developing new tech features” and improving the experience for users.

Staxy, which began life as a solution for students, now offers a “white label”
