Rankin, the acclaimed portrait photographer, has said his father at first refused to speak to him when he disclosed his career choice.
“He said: ‘You’re throwing everything away, like on a pipe dream’,” Rankin, 56, told the new Working Class to World Class podcast.
The photographer went on to take pictures of people including Queen Elizabeth, David Bowie, Madonna and Kate Moss. His work has graced the covers of Vogue, GQ and Vanity Fair.
Rankin grew up in Paisley but moved to England aged nine as his father “wanted me to have the opportunities he didn’t have”, he told podcaster Lynn Lester.
