As Ricciardo tried to overtake on lap 51 of the race, he made contact with the AlphaTauri. Tsunoda's car rode up on the wheel of the McLaren before slamming into the floor. "What the f*** is he doing?" he yelled, clearly very unhappy with the Aussie for causing the crash. He then added: "How does he think he can overtake there?" AlphaTauri called him back to the pits where they tried to change his front wing, but while they were in the process of doing so they noticed a terminal problem on his car and instead decided it would be best to retire the car. Ricciardo was quickly given a 10-second time penalty for causing the crash, but it only inspired him to produce some of the best driving he has managed all season. Soon he was cutting through the pack with ease, moving up the points positions as quickly as he could. He was clearly desperate to offset the time penalty as much as he could before the end of the race. And soon he was in seventh place, with enough of a gap to Esteban Ocon behind him to make sure he would not lose any positions once the penalty had been applied. Ricciardo then lost some time as Fernando Alonso threatened to undo all his good work as he suffered an engine blowout. But the race director decided a full safety car was not necessary while the marshals move his stricken Alpine off a slip road, and the Aussie would have breathed a huge sigh of relief. --- There will be more to follow on this breaking news story.
