The seven clichés of the middle-class countryside

From designer wellies to red trousers, Britain’s rural residents come in an array of forms

You may have seen that Zara Tindall (Sporty Royal) is now modelling country wear for Musto, an outdoor brand that the late Queen sometimes wore. The business of country clothing is not as simple as it once was. If you’re a London socialite who likes to weekend at Soho Farmhouse in the Cotswolds, your idea of outdoor wear is designer wellies and a down jacket. If you’re a long-term resident of the local village, it’s jeans and a fleece, and that’s your indoor wear, too. And if you’re Kaleb, the farming contractor on Jeremy Clarkson’s farm, it’s overalls.

So, one person’s idea of what happens in the country is now very different from the next person’s, even within the same square mile. Rarely if ever have the words “I’m off to the country” meant so many different things to different people.

Here, then, are the seven country tribes (at the time of going to press… could be one more by now).
