Our reader has run out of solutions (and patience) with a wonky oil level light
The amber oil level light (not the red oil pressure light) of my 2011 Hyundai i30 comes on after about 60 miles or half an hour on a long run. It has been to the garage four times; the oil level has been checked repeatedly and a new sensor was fitted, but the problem remains. I have a £350 bill and the garage says it can do no more. My Hyundai dealer advised me to switch the ignition on and off five times, which solves it briefly, but after a while the light comes on again. Do you have any ideas?

I hadn’t heard of this problem and neither had any of my contacts in the trade, so I did a bit of research to see what I could find out. There’s good news and bad news.
The good news – for what it’s worth – is that you’re not alone. Several i30 owners have reported a similar issue and replaced their oil level sensor just as you have, only to find that it hasn’t solved the problem. Interestingly, some of these report that their cars have been fixed by the replacement of the sensor, only for the problem to recur shortly afterwards, which suggests something else, possibly a wiring fault, might be throwing the sensor out.
