Lewis Hamilton fires back at Fernando Alonso over world title comments

Lewis Hamilton has hit back at Fernando Alonso after the Spaniard insinuated that most of his world titles aren’t worth as much as Max Verstappen’s. Alonso pointed to the notion that the Brit only had to beat team-mates to reach his formidable haul of seven Drivers’ Championships, which may not have sat well in Hamilton’s camp. Hamilton and Alonso formed a fractious partnership during the Brit’s rookie F1 year at McLaren. Digs have flown in both directions since going their separate ways in 2008 and Alonso was the latest to make a bold statement as he discussed Hamilton’s world titles haul. The Alpine star claimed that he has ‘a lot of respect for Hamilton’, but added: “It is different when you win seven world titles when you only had to fight with your team-mate. Then I think a championship has less value than when you have fewer titles but have had to fight against other drivers with equal or even better material.”In the early hours of Sunday morning, Hamilton struck back on social media by posting a picture of himself at the top of the podium, looking down on Alonso below during their time together at McLaren. The 37-year-old captioned the photo with a simple ‘thumbs-up’ emoji.  Lewis Hamilton may not have taken kindly to Fernando Alonso’s world title comments (Image: GETTY)We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story. For the latest news and breaking news visit: express.co.uk/sport/footballStay up to date with all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you.Follow us on Twitter @dexpress_sport – the official Daily Express & Express.co.uk Twitter account – providing real news in real time. We’re also on Facebook @dailyexpresssport – offering your must-see news, features, videos and pictures throughout the day to like, comment and share from the Daily Express, Sunday Express and Express.co.uk.
