Drug testing is to be introduced in Irish nightclubs and other venues after three substances never found before in Ireland were uncovered at Electric Picnic.
The results of a pilot programme at this year’s Electric Picnic music festival were published by the Health Service Executive (HSE) this week and the results worried health officials and the government.
The scheme involved festivalgoers anonymously surrendering drugs into special bins; 46 samples were tested. Three new psychoactive substances were identified that had not previously been detected in Ireland.
The make-up of four samples remains unconfirmed. Nineteen samples – eight powders and 11 pills – were found to be MDMA; five of the powders were almost pure MDMA while the contents of the pills, better known as Ecstasy, ranged
