The gyrations of the Tory party, not merely in recent months but in the years that it has been tearing itself apart over Brexit, have not been pleasant to watch. We may not be over-fond of the Tories in Ireland, at times for good reasons. But there are warnings for us, and there should be lessons, as the political dynamics of our nearest neighbours play out both as farce and tragedy.
There have been a great many causative factors in the Tory train wreck, but one which has received insufficient attention has been the failure of much of the British mainstream news media to hold the politicians’ feet to the fire. They should have been doing so since David Cameron promised in 2013 that if
