Police forces should examine the social media activity of new recruits in far more detail to root out corrupt and predatory officers, a law enforcement watchdog is expected to say this week.
A damning report by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) will highlight failures in national vetting practices that have allowed misogynistic, racist and other rogue behaviour to slip through the net.
The review of police vetting and anti-corruption practices was ordered last year by Priti Patel, who was then the home secretary, following the rape and murder of Sarah Everard by Wayne Couzens, an armed officer in Scotland Yard’s elite parliamentary and diplomatic protection squad.
