The comforting comeback of fitted carpets

Let the floor sanders fall silent, put away those ugly sheepskin slippers and bid goodbye to dust bunnies, because fitted carpet is back. This winter the standard issue floorboards-and-rug combo that has been the foundation of every aspirational home makeover since the 1990s just won’t cut it. We want ankle warmth and underfoot cosseting and the only answer is carpet. So hello again loop pile, flatweave, Axminster, twist and shag.

The revival is partly driven by a new generation of buyers who haven’t grown up in carpeted homes, according to Lorna Haigh, creative director at Alternative Flooring. “They see wall-to-wall carpet as not just comfortable but chic.
