A Labour councillor who joked he had the “worst tan for a black man” will stand to be an MP.
Darren Rodwell, who is white, and the leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, was investigated after making the comments at a Black History Month event.
He was cleared of wrongdoing following a one-hour interview in front of the Labour National Executive Committee and has now been selected as the candidate for Barking.
Announcing his selection on Saturday, he said: “I am so honoured to have been selected as the Labour candidate for Barking.
