Delayed and over-budget Scottish ferry ‘could be mothballed’

One of the two CalMac ferries being built on the Clyde may end up being mothballed, a former UK government minister has warned.

Two new ferries are to be dedicated to the Uig-Tarbert and Uig-Lochmaddy routes between Skye and the Outer Hebrides – however, they will not be delivered before 2026.

The announcement of two new ferries costing £115 million means that the still unnamed “Hull 802” – being built by Ferguson Marine – will no longer be used on the routes leading to increased speculation about its future. It is one two ferries that are five years late and nearly three times over the initial joint £97 million budget.
