John Lamont was furious when he lost his crown as the fastest MP after finishing behind Andrew Bowie, his fellow Scottish Conservative, in the 2019 London Marathon. Lamont had been monitoring his party colleague’s previous run times online and was confident that he would once again be at the front of the pack.
Three years on, he has defied what had become accepted wisdom among Scottish political observers and won the race to a ministerial role in the UK government as Rishi Sunak moves to unite the Conservatives north and south of the border.
