Graham Norton is right – we should let trans people speak for themselves

Last week news broke that presenter and powerhouse Graham Norton had deactivated his Twitter account, after becoming the subject of social media pile-on.

What was the presenter’s crime? Saying that instead of asking celebrities what they think about trans issues, the media should speak to trans people and their families instead.

He said that as part of a larger interview at the Cheltenham Literary Festival where the host asked him specifically about ‘cancel culture’.

Norton responded that we should actually be calling it ‘accountability’ as some of those complaining about being ‘cancelled’ were just incensed about being held accountable for their actions or what they had said. Afterwards, he was then asked specifically about J.K. Rowling.

He said, ‘When I’m asked about it I become part of the discussion… I’m painfully aware that my voice adds nothing to that discussion.
