Barcelona may spark Man Utd and Chelsea scrap as two ‘up for sale’

Barcelona could spark a transfer scramble between Manchester United and Chelsea after reportedly putting Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay up for sale. The cash-strapped Spanish outfit still need to raise vital funds, with their impending exit from the Champions League another obstacle in their quest for resources. De Jong and Depay have apparently been transfer-listed to raise cash. Both players were of interest to Man Utd and Chelsea during the summer transfer window. United spent most of the off-season chasing midfielder De Jong. The Dutchman was earmarked as Erik ten Hag’s top target when the head coach was prised away from Ajax towards the end of last season. De Jong ultimately remained in Spain, with Barcelona keen to keep the 25-year-old. It was also not clear if the former Ajax star even wanted to join the Red Devils, with a possible move to Chelsea later in the transfer window far more enticing. JUST IN: What Man Utd chief Fletcher has said about Casemiro behind the scenes Frenkie de Jong could be of interest to Man Utd and Chelsea (Image: GETTY IMAGES)Both clubs also expressed an interest in signing former United winger Depay, who has enjoyed a successful career since underwhelming at Old Trafford between 2015 and 2017. The 29-year-old only joined Barcelona in the summer of 2021, but the more recent additions of several attackers – including Robert Lewandowski – has pushed Depay down the pecking order. Spanish publication Sport claim that both players alongside five other team-mates have been put up for sale. United and Chelsea would likely be incredibly interested in a deal for both players, prompting a major transfer fight between the two Premier League clubs. United could need a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. It comes in the aftermath of Barcelona’s dismal 3-0 defeat by Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Xavi Hernandez’s side can now not reach the knockout rounds of the Champions League, preventing a key revenue stream. DON’T MISS…Chelsea told to complete deal for Trossard – ‘Better than Eden Hazard’Chelsea ‘scouting Denzel Dumfries’ as Potter eyes ex-Man Utd targetChelsea can build unstoppable new midfield but it may cost Boehly Man Utd and Chelsea both showed a summer transfer interest in Barcelona ace Memphis Depay (Image: GETTY IMAGES)
