‘Inhumane’ detention camp could be expanded to house thousands more migrants

Asylum centre at Manston airport in Kent is holding nearly 3,000 migrants in ‘catastrophically overcrowded’ conditions, the ISU union warns

A detention camp on the south coast could be expanded to house thousands more Channel migrants under plans being considered by the Home Office to tackle the crisis.

Ministers are also drawing up proposals for a “bespoke route” for Albanians that would separate them from other Channel migrants and fast track their deportations. Some 12,000 of the 38,000 Channel migrants this year are from the Balkan state.

The move emerged after warnings by the ISU union, which represents Border Force officers, that nearly 3,000 migrants are being unlawfully held in “inhumane” and “catastrophically overcrowded” conditions in the asylum processing centre at the Manston airport site in Kent.

It was originally designed to hold fewer than 1,000 people for just 24 hours, but is now in potential breach of its legal capacity by housing more than 2,600 for up to four weeks.
