Furious Ronaldo loses cool after Man Utd goal ruled out vs Sheriff

Cristiano Ronaldo raged after having a Manchester United goal disallowed in the Red Devils’ Europa League clash with Sheriff Tiraspol. The star furiously thrashed the ball into the upper echelons of Old Trafford after his second-half strike was chalked off. Ronaldo had been drafted back into the first-team squad for this European group stage fixture. United boss Erik ten Hag had infamously demoted the 37-year-old to the U21s and barred him from taking part in last weekend’s Premier League draw with Chelsea. That came after Ronaldo stormed out of Old Trafford before the end of the win over Tottenham three days prior. The Portugal captain was keen to make a positive impression against Sheriff and nearly marked his return to action with a goal. With the score 1-0 thanks to international team-mate Diogo Dalot’s header, Ronaldo latched onto a knock-down and lifted the ball into the net. However, as he turned round to celebrate Ronaldo noticed the assistant referee’s flag raised for offside. The former Real Madrid ace had strayed just ahead of the Sheriff defence as the ball was played into the penalty area. Clearly enraged about the incident, Ronaldo turned into the net, picked up the ball and proceeded to smash it into the upper tier of Old Trafford’s Stretford End. Ronaldo did eventually get his goal later in the game. After a thumping Marcus Rashford header put United 2-0 ahead, Ronaldo bagged his side’s third having followed up after an excellent save by Sheriff goalkeeper Maksym Koval. Ten Hag had started Ronaldo in an exciting front three alongside youngsters Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. The latter, an 18-year-old academy graduate, was making his first start for the club. Explaining his decision to reprise Ronaldo, Ten Hag told BT Sport: “We have a trio with Cristiano [Ronaldo], with Antony and Garnacho who have the qualities to create, to dribble, that’s what is expected of them, to create chances and goals.’The Dutchman added: “He doesn’t have to convince me [off the pitch], he has to convince me on the pitch. He is an important part of the squad and we have to play a role in all competitions. Today we need goals, we have to win, we want to be number one in the pool.”We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story. For the latest news and breaking news visit: express.co.uk/sport/footballStay up to date with all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you.Follow us on Twitter @dexpress_sport – the official Daily Express & Express.co.uk Twitter account – providing real news in real time. We’re also on Facebook @dailyexpresssport – offering your must-see news, features, videos and pictures throughout the day to like, comment and share from the Daily Express, Sunday Express and Express.co.uk.
