Democrat John Fetterman struggles in key Senate debate amid stroke recovery

The liberal, who only narrowly survived the brain condition, stumbled against Donald Trump-backed rival Dr Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania

Rising Democratic star John Fetterman stumbled against celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz in one of the most highly anticipated debates of the US midterms, potentially costing his party its best chance to flip a Republican-held Senate seat.

Liberal Mr Fetterman, who only narrowly survived a stroke months ago, suffered a serious blow in Pennsylvania after squaring off against Donald Trump-backed rival Dr Oz on Tuesday, with just a fortnight to go before all-important elections that could either help or hamstring president Joe Biden’s agenda for the next two years.

Mr Fetterman’s stroke in May left the tattooed 6ft 8in progressive lieutenant governor struggling with auditory processing issues and forced him to rely on subtitles displayed above the moderators.

The debate in Harrisburg, the bellwether state’s capital and one which has a history of swaying elections, was unprecedented as there has never been a closed-captioned political debate in a high-profile Senate race.
