Liverpool called out for ‘turning a blind eye’ after transfer blow

Liverpool have been called out by club icon Jamie Carragher for ignoring potential moves after they were snubbed by Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni in the summer. Jurgen Klopp’s side have had a disappointing start to the season as they sit eighth in the Premier League table, but did qualify for the Champions League knock-out stages on Wednesday with a 3-0 win away to Ajax.Liverpool’s lack of quality in depth has been highlighted this campaign due to their lengthy injury list, as youngsters Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho have been asked to play significant minutes in midfield. However there have been calls for several years for the Reds to reinvigorate their midfield, though they have largely fallen on deaf ears.Klopp admitted he was wrong not to add to his midfield towards the end of the summer window, following links to Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and then-Monaco’s Tchouameni, who has since moved to Real Madrid. Following injuries to Thiago, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool opted to sign Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus but the Brazilian only made one substitute appearance before suffering a long-term injury.Carragher has claimed that the Reds made a mistake in not identifying midfielders in a lower-quality bracket to sign after it was made clear that they would not have been able to bring either Bellingham or Tchouameni to Anfield in the summer. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp may be regretting adding to his midfield in the summer. (Image: GETTY)’I felt Liverpool feel as though they can just get through another season in midfield because they missed out on Jude Bellingham and [Aurelien] Tchouameni who went to Real Madrid,’ Carragher told CBS Sports.’This season has proved they should have gone into the market for just what we might call good players because at this moment the midfield is just not functioning, and when you have a problem defensively and going forward, the first place you look at is the midfield.’DON’T MISSMan Utd finally have a Roy Keane successor ahead of Sheriff clashArsenal signing Milinkovic-Savic would be bad news for four playersFA confirm decision on Henderson and Gabriel bust-up during Arsenal vs Liverpool Jamie Carragher has questioned Liverpool’s transfer policy.
