Lorene Summey, from Cherryville in North Carolina, was born on November 23, 1917 and is officially the oldest person in the neighbourhood. The oldest of six children, Lorene Summey, often had to sit at home and look after her younger siblings as they partied leaving unable to experience the real thing - until now. Mrs Summey is to be granted her wish and finally have her own birthday party after local neighbours, family and friends have come together to make her dream come true. On Friday, November 18, her requested Hoedown Barn Dance theme party, will take place and she will not have to spend a penny thanks to the generosity of her friends and neighbours. The party will be held at her residency the Somerset Court of Cherryville A bbq, DJ, photographer and of course a birthday cake have all been booked; even the Burns High School Health Sciences students are giving up their free time to help volunteer on the night. In addition, a huge happy birthday sign will spread across her back garden which has been donated by a local group. Cherryville's City Council are declaring the special birthday 'Lorene Summey Day' and the county will have a special "Summey Holiday" in her name too. Cherryville Police Department are joining in on the event with officers escorting the 105-year-old down to her own birthday party as she gets the VIP treatment. To greet Mrs Summey will be Cherryville Mayor Henry Beam along with members of the City Council and the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, all of which has left her feeling overwhelmed.
