Barcelona crash out at Champions League as Laporta plans left in ruins

Barcelona: The La Liga giants have crashed out of the Champions League (Image: Getty Images/Anadolu Images/Express Sport)Barcelona have crashed out of the Champions League at the group stages for the second successive season, dealing a huge blow to the club’s short-term finances. The La Liga giants will drop down to the Europa League for the knockout stages after Inter Milan’s victory over Viktoria Plzen mathematically ended their chances of qualifying from Group C.The Blaugrana needed the Czech minnows to prevent Serie A giants Inter from picking up three points at the San Siro in the early kick-off on Wednesday to have any chance to securing their passage to the last-16.But the Nerazzurri were motivated from the first whistle and Simone Inzaghi’s side managed to secure a comfortable 4-0 win thanks to a double from Edin Dzeko, plus goals from former Manchester United stars Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku, sending Barcelona out of the competition. While Barca’s destiny was out of their hands, the result will only pile the pressure on head coach Xavi Hernandez, who has conceded he is not immune from losing his job after watching his side blow their chances of qualification on matchday four.READ MORE: Xavi claims Champions League ‘being cruel’ to Barcelona Inter Milan: Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s goals handed Inter an easy win (Image: AFP)Ousmane Dembele gave the Catalan giants the lead against Inter before Nicolo Barella levelled the score after the interval. Lautaro Martinez then handed the Italians the lead before Robert Lewandowski brought the game back to 2-2 on 82 minutes.A late strike from Robin Gosens appeared to have handed Inter a priceless victory before Lewandowski equalised in stoppage time. But the result put Inter in the driving seat to secure their progress to the next stage of the competition with a win over Plzen, who had failed to pick up a single point. And it proved to be an unrealistic hope as Inter showed their strength to stroll past the Czech champions. It means Barcelona can no longer catch Inter and their fate is sealed before they have even kicked a ball in their tie against Bayern Munich.DON’T MISSChelsea completing De Jong transfer would be bad news for 4 playersVan Dijk dropping Barcelona hints may leave Klopp on alertChelsea ‘receive message from De Jong camp’ over January move Joan Laporta: The Barcelona president is set to be left with millions to find in the budget (Image: Getty Images)
