Manifesto pledges Rishi Sunak vowed to deliver could be broken, says James Cleverly

Foreign Secretary says ministers must make ‘dynamic decisions’ after PM vowed to fulfil programme that saw Boris Johnson elected

The Government could break the 2019 manifesto pledges Rishi Sunak vowed to deliver in his first speech as PM, James Cleverly has said.

The Foreign Secretary said ministers must make “dynamic decisions” after Mr Sunak vowed to fulfil the popular programme which got Boris Johnson elected, saying the mandate of the Tories “unites all of us”.

Mr Sunak on Tuesday said he would “deliver on its promise” for “a stronger NHS, better schools, safer streets, control of our borders, protecting our environment, supporting our armed forces”.

When it was put to Mr Cleverly this morning that people had not voted for austerity in the last election, he said the pledges were made before the Covid pandemic and invasion of Ukraine.
