Europe’s top scorer McIlroy insisted that the likes of Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia would not be needed in the 2025 Ryder Cup after they resigned from the DP World Tour
Rory McIlroy has told Europe’s LIV Golf rebels that they are now history in the Ryder Cup – and the new team-room is better without them. “It’s a new era,” said the world No.2. “And it’s a pretty good one.”
Luke Donald admitted he would “consider” staying on as captain at “boisterous” Bethpage Black in 2025 – and the job is his if he wants it following his Rome triumph. The former world No.1 only took over last year after Henrik Stenson defected to LIV – and Ryder Cup legends Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia were ineligible after resigning from the DP World Tour.
The peace deal currently being negotiated between the PGA and DP World Tours and the Saudi Public Investment Fund could open the door for a return of the rebels to the Ryder Cup. But that would cause a huge split – and Europe’s top scorer McIlroy insisted that they are no longer needed.
“They’ve had unbelievable Ryder Cup careers and they’ve made their choices, and they’ve done what they’ve done and no one can take away the impact that they’ve had for the European team over the years,” he said.
