Critic of Scottish gender reforms to advise UK equality watchdog

An outspoken critic of Scotland’s gender recognition law reforms has been appointed as an adviser to the UK equality watchdog.

Mandy Rhodes, the editor of Holyrood magazine, is one of four new appointments by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to its Scotland committee.

Rhodes has repeatedly criticised the Gender Recognition Reform Act and the nature of the debate surrounding it. Last year she wrote: “Women in Scotland are seeing their rights eroded, while at the same time being told that ‘trans lives are not up for debate’ when theirs already are.”

Her appointment was welcomed online by campaign groups, feminists and academics, with Woman’s Place UK, which campaigns for safe spaces and distinct services for women, saying that Rhodes’s new role was “fantastic
