GameCentral goes hands-on with the latest entry in the WarioWare series, as the surreal microgame collection enjoys a return to form.
Nintendo may be one of the most respected games publishers in the world, with a track record of quality that is unmatched for a company of their size, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the occasional dud.
Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom is one of the best games of the year but Everybody 1-2-Switch! Is one of the worst, a dire party game that is so paper thin in terms of concept and content that you’d swear it was a cheaply made indie game, not a first party Nintendo release.
It was especially peculiar because it was basically a less interesting riff on the WarioWare franchise, which this year is celebrating its 20th anniversary. There’s already been one WarioWare game on the Switch, with 2021’s disappointing Get It Together!, but this new entry seems to be a much more successful restatement of the series’ formula.
The WarioWare series started in 2003 as a Game Boy Advance title, a collection of over 200 microgames, most of which only last for five seconds. They involved a bewildering array of surreal situations, from plucking nose hairs to protecting a kitten from the rain, but were thrown at you so quickly that you almost didn’t have time to ponder just how odd the game was.
