Robbie Williams faces severe backlash as he asks fans for shoplifting advice

Former Take That singer Robbie Williams has faced severe backlash from the retail industry after he took to social media to ask his 2.4 million followers for shoplifting tips

Robbie Williams has been slammed after he asked for shoplifting tips.

The former Take That star has angered store bosses as he took to social media seeking advice. The multi-millionaire Angels hitmaker asked his followers: “Thinking of getting into shoplifting. Anyone got any tips?” He then followed up with a message to his 2.4million followers saying: “I’m just going to the shops… anyone want anything?”

Robbie also posted a photo after his shopping trip, where he said he managed to get “some scotch guard, an umbrella and a figurine of St. Joseph”. However, the singer’s gag didn’t go down well with some. His joke comes amid shoplifting being at an all-time high and costing retailers over £1 billion a year.

In response to Robbie, Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre For Retail Research, said: “The Robbie Williams comment is a disgrace.” James Lowman, chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores, said: “Dealing with theft definitely isn’t funny for the thousands of retailers that are being targeted on a daily basis.” While Luke Johnson, chief executive officer of Gail’s Bakery, said: “A vastly rich ex-pop star mocking a serious social and economic problem shows a celebrity truly lost in showbiz.”
