New Zealand’s prime minister, struggling in opinion polls and with a general election in a fortnight, is in isolation after catching Covid-19.
“Bugger! After a rough night I woke up feeling pretty unwell and just got this test result,” Labour’s Chris Hipkins wrote on social media on Sunday, sharing an image of his positive test.
An expected five-day isolation will keep Hipkins, 45, off the hustings as his opponent, the conservative National Party leader Christopher Luxon, maintains a ten-point lead with 36 per cent support. Election day is October 14.
Luxon, 53, formerly chief executive of Air New Zealand, has been in parliament for less than three years. His support increased after the resignation of the Labour prime minister, Jacinda Ardern in January. She was
