Italian court rebukes Giorgia Meloni for detaining migrants

An Italian court has ruled that measures to imprison migrants while their refugee applications are processed are illegal under the country’s law and that of the EU.

The court ordered the release of three Tunisian asylum seekers detained in a migrant centre and delivered a rebuke to Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister, who wants to clamp down on refugees entering the country.

The migrants, who arrived in Italy on September 20, had lodged an appeal after they were sent to a new detention centre in the Sicilian town of Pozzallo while their requests for international protection were being assessed.

A court in Catania ruled that the migrants should be “immediately released”. The ruling did not apply to a fourth Tunisian migrant, who had
