Video games have become a chore and a waste of time – Reader’s Feature

A reader has become disillusioned with modern gaming, frustrated at a lack of innovation and squabbling between fans and game creators.

Gaming has become a chore to keep up with and endure. As a fellow reader of this site, something has been going on lately. From Microsoft’s constant deals to critics getting harassed over their opinions, to the lack of any noteworthy games, and the endless cynicism towards the medium it has left me with one conclusion. Gaming is a waste of time to even keep up with.

I’m not saying it to bandwagon the certain opinions of many others, or even to hate on the medium. I’m saying it to suggest to others that if you actively dislike the state of gaming nowadays to find new hobbies or jobs that won’t make you miserable or tired.

Every game coming out is either a mediocre Soulslike (Lies Of P) or a broken online-only landfill designed to swindle you out of your money (Diablo 4 and Payday 3). There’s never any game on Metacritic that gets above 40, that makes me want to invest into the gameplay because I’m always moving on to the next game to pretend to be hyped about and then move on from.

The one time I wasn’t feeling that was during Baldur’s Gate 3 and Pikmin 4, that made me think ‘Wow, these games are good! Who the hell made these? Because it sure isn’t like the triple-A industry.’ Well, my personal theory is that during the Xbox 360 and Wii era, the industry didn’t realise that they didn’t have to try in order to make a profit, so they made a lot of good decisions and games to cater to their audience and actually listened to their thoughts.
