Gareth Butterfield spends a week in Kia’s most popular model to see what all the fuss is about
Look at the UK’s latest new car sales charts and there’s some surprises. It’s never a surprise to see the Vauxhall Corsa in the top 10, and the Nissan Qashqai is predictable. As is the Tesla Model 3.
But Kia’s Sportage, an SUV of all things, is in the top 10 too. It’s even above the Ford Fiesta at the moment. So what is all the fuss about? Why is the nation clamouring for a Kia?
I’ve just spent a week in one and there are a few reasons that become obvious from the word go. Firstly, the Sportage is really well equipped. This is a trait across the Kia range, but even lowlier models get plenty of tech bundled in, along with decent engines and safety kit.
It’s also surprisingly practical. Residual values are good, and there’s that seven-year warranty.
