I've just spent a week in one and there are a few reasons that become obvious from the word go. Firstly, the Sportage is really well equipped. This is a trait across the Kia range, but even lowlier models get plenty of tech bundled in, along with decent engines and safety kit. It's also surprisingly practical. Residual values are good, and there's that seven-year warranty. But then there's the styling. It's one of those cars I expected would grow on me, but it hasn't. Kia appears to have tried to blend the looks of the fifth generation of the Sportage with the brilliant EV6, but I'm not sure it's translated all that well. The rear is a bit more sober, but I'm still not sure about the protruding "ducktail" on the boot lid. I think I'm on my own on this view, however, because the Sportage was the best-selling new car in the UK in January 2022. The interior is much less divisive. It's very much standard fare for Kias, which means good materials, comfy seats, lots of space, and all very easy to use. In top-spec cars, like the one I tested, there's a lovely 12.3-inch infotainment screen with a matching digital display in front of the driver. I'm never a fan of loading all the functions into a touch screen, but it is quite intuitive in the Sportage. I also like the neatly-designed air vents and door pulls, the rotary gear selector, and the leather steering wheel. This){kind=link}
