Liverpool make the journey to Tottenham on Saturday and Jurgen Klopp claims that Spurs, as well as fellow “heavyweight” side Chelsea, will benefit from a lack of European football
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says that Tottenham and Chelsea will both benefit from a “massive advantage” this season by not playing in Europe.
Both Spurs and Chelsea failed to qualify for the Conference League, Europa League or Champions League last term, meaning that they have fewer matches to play over the course of the 2023-24 campaign. Liverpool, meanwhile, are playing in the Europa League, a competition which Klopp is already concerned could overload some of his stars given the increased fixture congestion.
His side were unable to beat Chelsea on the opening day and face Tottenham this Saturday after only playing in Europe once so far, but the Reds boss insists that the two London “heavyweights” will enjoy their less strenuous schedules this season. “Chelsea and Tottenham have no European football,” Klopp explained ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs.
“Two heavyweights not in European football, they have the whole week to train when others travel. It’s a massive advantage. Getting into the Champions League this year will be a massive, difficult task [for us] because they (Liverpool’s rivals) will be well rested.”
