Classic boys’ baby name makes huge comeback as it debuts in top 100 chart

A classic and still very underused boys’ name has made a huge comeback after soaring into a list of the UK’s top 100 names, and it could well be the perfect name for parents who want to give their little one a bit of star power

As any parents-to-be currently writing up their own lists will know, baby names have a tendency to come in and out of fashion, but there are a few classic choices that return time and time again. One such name looks set to be on the brink of a huge comeback, and it could be a very sweet choice for those who dream of their little one going far in life.

Avid baby name watchers will of course be aware that, each year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) releases annual figures for the most popular baby names In England and Wales, pulling data from the previous year. These lists will include plenty of very popular names heard across playgrounds up and down the country, and can also be a great indicator of any upcoming trends.

The latest figures, published October 2022, revealed the top 100 boys’ names and top 100 girls’ names from 2021, revealing that Oliver had finally been knocked off the top spot after eight years, replaced by Noah. There were also a few new interesting entries to the top 100, including a classic name that could soon become a firm favourite.

The name in question is Rupert, a charming name of Germanic origin that means “bright fame”. Fittingly, this starry name has theatrical associations, with famous thespian bearers including the likes of Rupert Grint, Rupert Everett, and Rupert Graves. This list saw Rupert come in at number 92, making its top 100 debut alongside Brody, with the girls’ names Sara, Beatrice, and Lara also breaking into the top 100.
