NHS approves 90-minute stomach procedure for weight loss

Millions of obese people will be eligible for a 90-minute procedure that reduces the size of the stomach without the need for surgery, under new NHS guidance.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) said that endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), sometimes called an “accordion procedure”, was both safe and effective.

It should be an option on the NHS for the one in four adults in England who are obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, if lifestyle changes have not led to weight loss, Nice said.

Obesity is estimated to cost the NHS £6.5 billion a year and is a leading cause of health problems including cancer and diabetes.

ESG works by inserting a flexible tube with a camera
