Ryder Cup star working with bomb disposal expert to handle pressure in Rome

Jon Rahm has gone to unusual lengths as he bids to helm Europe’s Ryder Cup team get the better of the United States and gain revenge for their heavy defeat in 2021

The pressure facing a Ryder Cup golfer can’t be underestimated, and John Rahm’s efforts to drown out background noise in Rome this year will see him continue working with bomb disposal expert Joseba del Carmen.

Rahm is part of a European team aiming to make up for their heavy 19-9 defeat in the 2021 Ryder Cup in the United States. This year’s battle sees golfers from Europe and the US return to this side of the Atlantic, with Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome playing host to the contest.

Former world No.1 Rahm qualified through the European points list, and will be representing his continent for the third time. The 28-year-old has won more match-ups than he’s lost across the 2018 and 2021 editions, and this will be the third time he has gone into a Ryder Cup with Del Carmen as his mental coach with the pair having worked together for nine years.

“I feel more pressure when Jon is playing than disarming bombs!” Del Carmen, who spent 14 years with the Basque Police’s bomb squad, told The Sun. “I can see moments where Jon is suffering and worry about him.
