Mum tells Rishi Sunak she has sleepless nights as child’s school has no money

Leyburn Primary School in Rishi Sunak’s Richmond, North Yorks, constituency doesn’t have enough cash to pay for new computers. The PM donated a £10 bottle of wine to help

A mother in Rishi Sunak’s constituency has warned him she’s having “sleepless nights” as her child’s school is short of the cash it needs.

The Mirror revealed earlier this year that Leyburn Primary School is desperately trying to raise money as it cannot afford new computers. But the PM, who is the local MP in Richmond in North Yorkshire, donated a bottle of wine worth just £10 to help them with their efforts.

As he appeared on BBC Tees, Mr Sunak was played a clip from Mel Wise, chair of the Parents, Teachers and Friends Association, explaining their plight. She told him: “We’re trying to raise £18,000 to cover the cost of new computers for the school. We’re having sleepless nights, putting events on, family fun days. Should we really be having to do all this to supply the children with up to date technology?”

Mr Sunak brushed off the criticism, saying: “I care passionately about our children’s education. “I think that probably one of the most important things I can do is make sure that we have a world-class education system to set our kids up for the future. That is pretty much my most important job quite frankly.” He claimed that “on a per pupil basis, there’s more money going into our schools than there ever has been in history”.
