What would've been called Oculus Quest 3 is almost being shadow-dropped, with a launch on October 10 at a price of £480. As expensive as that it is, it does represent good value for money, as the chief appeal of the Quest line is that they don't need to be connected to a console or PC to work – all of the processing is done by the headset and so it doesn't have any wires to trip up on. Although Meta already said the headset was due this year the suddenness of the price announcement is perhaps an attempt to get in before the launch of Apple's Vision Pro, but considering that costs $3,499 it doesn't really seem like direct competition. Meta is keen to describe the Quest 3 as a mixed reality headset, which means that as well as VR it also does AR – mixing views of the real world with computer-generated imagery. Although not having the power of a console or PC to draw on does limit its graphical abilities, the new specs do still seem impressive, with the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor promising twice the graphical processing power of the Quest 2. It also has 8GB of RAM, with two 120Hz LCD display that have a resolution of 2064 x 2208 each – so 30% sharper than the Quest 2. The horizontal field of view is 110° and the vertical goes up to 96°. The AR functions rely on two 18 PPD RGB colour cameras on the front of the headset, plus speakers that are 40% louder and a battery life of between 1.5 and 3 hours.
