It had been unusual, filled with blood or other material that indicated that it could be more dangerous than normal cysts, which tend to be relatively common in the menstrual cycle, affecting up to 10% of women, according to the National Institutes of Health. So, the doctors removed it. And sure enough, underneath it, they discovered a small mass, which they tested. It turned out to be "a very aggressive" early-stage tumour — a stage 1 teratoma, which is a type of cancer that affects multiple skin layers, according to the National Institutes of Health. "The story became crazy and weird," she told the publication. "It was good news in some ways that we had caught it so soon and we could treat it. ... There's a very real way that I could have not been here today, which is wild to think about."
