Sunak praises UK’s ‘fantastic multiculturalism’ in snub to Braverman

Prime Minister declines to endorse his Home Secretary’s hard language on immigration

Rishi Sunak has said that multiculturalism is “fantastic” as he declined to endorse Suella Braverman’s claim that it had failed.

Speaking on Thursday, the Prime Minister praised the UK’s “fantastic multicultural democracy”, saying the nation had done an “incredible job of integrating people”.

The apparent division exposes further differences between the two over immigration policy. Mrs Braverman has previously pushed for tougher crackdowns on net migration and last year publicly declared her support for the UK to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, a move so far resisted by Mr Sunak.

In a hard-line speech delivered in the US on Tuesday and said to have been approved by No 10, Mrs Braverman said migration to the UK and Europe in the past 25 years had been “too much, too quick” with too little thought given to integration and social cohesion compared with the focus on the “failed dogma of multiculturalism”.
