Jersey’s demise can be traced back to doorstep of RFU

Listen to article

Narrated by James Marriott

The RFU chief executive was labelled “Slippery Bill” Sweeney by the Eddie Jones camp last November. “Kill Bill” may be more appropriate now the last rites are being read to a fourth professional rugby club in the space of 12 months.

The RFU was able to distance itself somewhat from the demise of Worcester Warriors, Wasps and London Irish, even though the loss of three top-flight clubs exposed governance weaknesses at Twickenham and with its Premiership Rugby partners.

But the collapse of Jersey Reds, winners of the Championship last season and a club that had secured local government backing with a plan to put rugby at the heart of a new stadium complex, can be traced right to the doorstep of Twickenham.
