James Maddison delivers message Tottenham fans will love after Arsenal thriller

Tottenham’s new No.10 played a key role as Ange Postecoglou’s new-look side twice came from behind to claim a share of the spoils in the Premier League season’s first North London derby

James Maddison insisted Tottenham have shrugged off their “Spursy” tag after twice coming from behind at Arsenal.

Tottenham have long had a reputation for not being tough enough but Son Heung-Min equalised twice to deny the Gunners in a hard-fought North London derby.

Spurs midfielder Maddison, who set up both goals for the visitors, said: “Neutrals talk about Tottenham, they often say; soft, weak, bottle it, Spursy, all that rubbish. I think the last couple of weeks shows we might be going in a slightly different direction.”

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was delighted with his players’ spirit but unhappy with the penalty decision which went against Cristian Romero despite a lengthy VAR check. VAR Paul Tierney checked for a foul on James Maddison in the build-up, a possible deflection before Ben White’s shot hit Romero’s hand and also whether the Spurs defender should have been sent off which he could have been if Yves Bissouma was not behind him.
